And just like that, the semester is over. Here is my series, titled “To a degree, curious...”. It is in response to the diptych “Beauty Contest”, by Stefan Robinson. I’ve included my artist statement below! #latentaffect ...Archetype (noun): a very typical example of a certain person or thing; an original that has been imitated; a recurrent symbol or motif in literature, art or mythologyIn his piece “Beauty Contest”, Stefan Robinson presents the viewer with subjects whose identity as individuals is blocked by obscuring their eyes. We're left to interpret not WHO they are, but WHAT they are, what social roles they play, as defined by the abundant symbols that surround them. Through their clothes, gestures, hair style, and various props we're led to conclusions about social standing, historical setting, etc. The subjects become archetypes, successful and content as rulers of their suburban domain. This piece has inspired me to think about those symbols we surround ourselves with that help to define both what and who we are in our daily lives, and as well what clues or messages we may be sending all the time -- sometimes even unconsciously or in ways we don't intend. How do these symbols help or hinder how others interpret us?This series of images I'm creating explores the defining of archetypes by introducing the viewer to a cast of 6 people who have all come dressed as themselves, and placed into a bare environment. From here the viewer is left to investigate what qualities, and things, make up the archetype. These images were shot using a medium format film camera. Using medium format has allowed me to create images that are able to be printed much larger, while maintaining detail, than with a modern digital camera. The process of shooting medium format is also much slower, giving more time to help the models relax, and get used to the studio environment. With only 12 frames to a roll of film it also forces me to be more selective with what poses shoot, and which I pass on...#BW#bwphotography#fuji#fujifilm#Fuji100#Acros100#FujiAcros#Acros#filmphotography#filmcommunity#filmcamera#d76#darkroom#film#filmisnotdead#believeinfilm#ishootfilm#minol
