Although the word “curry” is now used to describe any Indian/Sri Lankan dishes that are soupy or gravy-based, I don’t recall hearing of this term growing up in Mumbai, India. 🤷🏽‍♀️So why do we use the word “curry” so heavily? Made me wonder…💁🏽‍♀️Did a little bit of reading 🙇🏽‍♀️and here’s what I found!—“Curry is a word invented by the British back when they ruled India. I have been interested in food history since I was in my teens, but this foray into writing about historical recipes, their cultural context, and formatting them for modern cooks while retaining as much accuracy as possible came about when I did a project for a class as an undergraduate; I was already in my late 20s (late starter). The project, which I called The Pound Cake Project, was about examining and baking five different "poundcake" recipes from four different centuries. This was a much a cultural history of food as it was about poundcake itself. And, if I may toot my own horn, I aced that assignment and that class. lisacomento photos downloadAdventures in cooking and baking tonight! I went back in time during Alexander Hamilton's era. Days of the Revolutionary War. Horse-drawn carriages. Wigs. Duels. I'm in the midst of reading and reviewing the educational new cookbook called "The Hamilton Cookbook" by Laura Kumin @motherwouldknow. I made the Baked White Fish first. During Hamilton's day "farm-to-table" was not a trend but a way of life. In recent years, we have been trying to go back to that with the help of incredible local companies like @fromthefarmer. When fish was caught it could not be frozen until they had a craving.. it had to be eaten right away.Second, I made the Split Pea Soup which takes me back to 4th Grade camp when we learned to pan for gold at a ghost town in California where I grew up. Good memories. I loved this recipe! It called for spices mace and cloves, which added a great depth of flavor. The Chocolate Puff recipe intrigued me but I need to try and make them again. They were addicting but I want to try to spray the wax paper with coconut spray or bake them longer. I used dark chocolate cocoa...so good!

skoranne photos downloadEarlier this year, I went on a beautifully curated culinary sojourn of Garhwal, and every meal I ate there reminded me of something from back home; from my Maharashtrian culinary heritage. I wrote about it in today’s @livemintlounge. Here’s an excerpt (link in bio): “High up in the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Dehradun is the temple complex of Lakhamandal. Here, we were welcomed into the head priest’s home for a typical Garhwali breakfast that included a variety of pakoris, swale (stuffed and fried flatbreads), a most delicious local apricot chutney and fresh rice papads. There were the ulwe or steamed rice-flour dumplings, a dish that convinced me that we Marathis were bound to Garhwal in more ways than one. The savoury ulwe were stuffed with a subtly spiced gehaat filling while the sweet ones were filled with a mixture of coconut, jaggery and sesame seeds.
